What's in a name?

I haven't added to my page in some time because I have recently moved house and have had quite a busy couple of months. However, we are largely unpacked and organised and thoughts are now turning to the Feng Shui of my new home. Which brings me on to the subject of names. So, what is in a name?

Well according to traditional Chinese philosophy, everything in the universe is believed to be made up of five natural elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each of these elements plays a role in balancing a person’s life and destiny. It is believed that unless we are in balance we will not be able to take advantage of the good fortune that comes our way. This is why in China, when a baby is born it is not uncommon for the parents to consult a Feng Shui Master who will use the Bazi (a form of Chinese astrology) to determine if any elements are missing from the baby's chart. The parents will then choose a name that includes a representation of the missing element, which in turn restores balance and allows their little one to attract the good fortune destined for them in their lifetime.

What does this have to do with the Feng Shui of my new home? Well, my home doesn't have a number only a name, and while the name Laigh Muir seems appealing enough, this is actually a scots term for low lying moor. Given my knowledge of Feng Shui I feel a more aspirational name would restore balance to my new home and in turn attract more good fortune to all who dwell there.

So goodbye Laigh Muir, hello Coorie Cottage!
